Our vision at Franche for art and design is simple: inspiration, exploration and confidence.
We aim to engage and inspire children through a diversity of artists and experiences to give them the confidence to explore new techniques and develop their artistic identity.
At Franche, Art and Design is outlined by the National Curriculum to ensure that all pupils:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
As a school, alongside the fundamental skills of drawing, painting and sculpture, we have carefully chosen additional ‘threads’ to develop pupils’ practical knowledge in photography, collage and textiles.
Children develop their skills in a meaningful way, intrinsic to and often shaping their other learning. They are also developing their understanding of aspirations within the arts through meeting others or looking at the work of an illustrator, graphic or textiles designer, photographer, sculptor or a mixed media artist. Exploring through process art and using sketch books to develop and practise ideas, children develop their skills, evaluating, refining and improving their work from Early Years to Year 6. Focusing importance on the learning journey ensures that the artistic focus is not solely centred on an end product. Repeating, improving and recording in this way enables children to build resilience, be willing to take risks, rise to meet challenges and be confidently creative. Each year, children are introduced to new artists, as well as revisiting prior learning, to ensure knowledge is embedded.
We aim to continue to develop pupils aspiration through inspiration, fostering a love of the Arts that permeates throughout the school and beyond.
