Instrumental music lessons at Franche

At Franche Primary School, children have the opportunity to learn a variety of musical instruments, all taught by external tutors.  

Lessons occur weekly during the school day. Most lessons are taught individually, but some instruments can be taught in pairs. Lessons are invoiced each half-term in advance for parents/carers by the music teacher.  

The school has very limited instruments that can be hired out to students and tutors can also advise on external organisations where instruments can be hired or purchased

Mr Poyner – Drums 

With over 20 years of teaching experience, Nick has worked with students of all ages and abilities in schools, colleges, Universities as well as private tuition. He has also worked with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, supporting talented young musicians as they prepare for higher-level study. 

Alongside his teaching career, Nick has enjoyed an exciting and varied touring career, performing globally with a wide variety of bands and artists. Nick's lessons are fun, engaging and tailored to each individual student.  

Ms McFarland – Singing 
 

Hannah has developed a reputation in the West Midlands area as both an excellent teacher and as a talented and versatile performing artist. She has performed solo at Symphony Hall and Birmingham Town Hall with orchestras including The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. 

Vocal health and enjoyment of singing. In her role as teacher, Hannah has two specialisms; teaching people with no experience and limited skill to excel, and coaching children towards auditions for professional roles. Hannah has successfully coached students to attain roles in the movies Wicked and Matilda: The Musical and the musicals Sinatra: The Musical, Nativity! The Musical, Matilda the Musical and School of Rock. 

Mr Smith – Guitar, Electric Guitar and Bass Guitar
 

Mr Smith is a multi-instrumentalist teacher who loves helping students explore music and build confidence, offering lessons that focus on real songs, creativity and enjoying the process. 

 He started playing bass professionally with the Birmingham band JAWS from 2017, gaining experience recording and performing live. He is currently the bassist for Bobbie Dazzle, performing at venues across the UK and at festivals around Europe. Whether you are just starting out or looking to improve playing, Mr Smith is here to help build confidence, learn great songs and develop your own style on the guitar and bass

Katie Brown – Keyboard  
 

Miss Brown has been our keyboard teacher since 2021 and also teaches at other local primary schools and at Load Street Studios. She was awarded Upper Distinctions for both her Music Performance Diploma and her Teaching Diploma.  

Miss Brown is a patient, encouraging and enthusiastic teacher who nurtures every student, helping them to develop their musical talent and confidence. She believes that expressing yourself through music is vitally important and that enjoying lessons is the key to successful learning.

Miss Foster – Flute and Clarinet 

 

Miss Foster is a dedicated and passionate woodwind teacher delivering lessons on flute and clarinet. She studied flute at The Royal College of Music and a PGCE at Birmingham City University.  

Miss Foster is principal flautist with The Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra and an experienced teacher in the West Midlands having taught in schools for many years. 

Miss Kerry – Violin, Piano, Ukulele, Recorder 
 

With over 20 years experience in Music Teaching in Schools across the region Sarah teaches Violin, Piano, Keyboard, Ukulele and Recorder. Sarah is a passionate Musician and Music Educator and plays violin in the Midlands Chamber Orchestra. 

 Where possible Sarah aims to get children playing in groups which is a fantastic experience and lots of fun. Students can take Music Exams if they wish and Sarah has had 100% success rate in those who have with many Merits and Distinctions.
